My wife recently went to visit her mom which she does often. She lives only an hour and a half away so once in a while my wife takes the kids up there for a few days. It is nice to have some time alone. I usually use it to get some extra work done.

This last time I thought about that saying that “when the wife is away the husband will play.” Of course that is used in many variations. But as I thought about it I realized that I really don’t do anything different when she is gone. Like I said I usually just get some more work done, due to the fact that I am not spending time with her or the kids.

Restrictive Relationships

There are many marriages that are sadly very restrictive. The husband is unable to do certain things when the wife is home or vice versa. That is a bad place to be and often leads to problems down the road. I gave a lot of thought to it and there really isn’t anything I really do different.

I’m not stuck saying “finally I can go fishing” or “finally I can hang out with my friends or play some video games.” Which if there is not a lot of work to do I may actually place some extra pc games that week. But not because I can’t normally.

Make sure that you are being yourself at all times and that you are allowing your spouse to do so as well.

Obviously there will be some things you do differently when the other is out of town etc.. But it should not be something you feel restricted on when they are around. This will lead to a feeling of wanting the spouse gone all the time and not excited when they come back. Not a good place to be.
