It’s Eternity, Shouldn’t It Be Taken More Seriously?
October 5th, 2009 by JR Griggs
One thing that has always baffled me about eternity, is how lightly people take it. It’s eternity! Why is it the only thing in life that we can just brush off as whatever you believe is right? Can you name anything else that we do that with? Most people believe there is a Heaven. Not as many believe that there is a Hell. That is because it is much nicer to believe that everyone goes to the good place and no one goes to the bad.
We toss Heaven around like it is just some place that anyone who was once nice to someone gets to go. We say things like “there are many roads to heaven”. Says who? Who put Heaven there? If there is a Heaven someone put it there and probably had some instructions on how to get in. But again we just make up what we think is the way. Forget seeking out to see if there are some instructions.
You’re Gonna Be Dead For A Long Time
You will be dead for quite some time. In fact, forever! So shouldn’t more thought be put into it? Shouldn’t we maybe spend some time researching it? Instead we decide that it is too hard to worry about the fact that we may not go. So we make up our own rules. If you make up your own rules on how to get into Heaven, than it is your own made up heaven.
See the way I see it is, since it seems like a pretty big deal to know where I go when I die, I thought it worth while to do some research.
You Make The Rules?
The common thought today is that whatever you believe is what happens. Does this make sense anywhere else? Can I run a race and then when I come in 50th say that it’s not fair and I believe that I won so I should get the trophy too? You would say I was insane! But that is what we do with eternity. We just make up our own rules on who we think should get in.
Imagine if I play the lottery and I do not win but I complain because I tried really hard. I had every intention of winning so why shouldn’t I? I can’t think of any other fact in this life that I can change due to what I believe. I’m not talking about opinions here I am talking about facts.
This isn’t about whether or not I think blue is a nice color. This is a matter of the fact that if I say a blue car is pink, I am wrong. There is no changing that. If there was a $1 million prize for getting the color right, I would lose. I would also be pretty stupid to then insist that it should be whatever I believe.
Who’s God Is It?
Another common saying is that God is who you think He is. Really? So if I say that he is the God of the Bible and the only way into Heaven is by believing in His Son Jesus Christ and you say that God allows everyone in. Someone has to be right and someone wrong. If not, then God is just a made up myth in our mind. We control who He is?
What kind of God is that? Do you really want to lay your eternity and every problem you face in the hands of someone that you made up? Come on. What else in this life do you do that with? Every idea out there of who God is cannot be right.
Narrow Minded?
I know this is narrow minded right? Well let’s look at that.
If I were to load a gun and point it at my head and then pull the trigger, what would happen? What? You say I would die? How narrow minded is that? You see I believe that guns just shoot imaginary bullets and they do what you think they will do. Crazy huh?
How about if I walk into a bank and point a gun at the teller and ask them to give me all the money in the drawer. I would be committing a crime and go to jail right? But how narrow minded is that? You see, I do not believe that is a crime. In my mind that should be perfectly legal and therefore the cops should not have any right to arrest me. I should also not have to serve a sentence if convicted because I do not believe in the laws that were set. Not only would I end up in jail I would be in a mental hospital!
But we call those who believe in one way to heaven narrow minded. It really does confuse me.
Why I Believe
Look I am not a touchy feely type of person. I never have been especially when it comes to God. I was not one of those Christians who had the amazing story of bright lights and a floaty feeling that made me believe. That just never happened for me and still does not.
I am an analytical person and had to look at the facts. After putting a lot of time studying the Bible and other religions and the facts that surround them I knew that God was real and what the Bible says, is fact. It does not matter how fair I think anything is.
I am not the Christian that will tell you I know God exists because the Bible says so. Or because I just “feel” him. Because you know what? There are days that I don’t. So I love that I have the facts to fall on and know that He is there even when I don’t feel Him.
I also do not like it when a Christian says that the Bible says so. Well, the Koran says something else. I believe in what the Bible says not because it says. Because I have researched the facts of the Bible and know that without a doubt I can prove all of it happened. That is why I believe.
So listen, please for your own good, take eternity more seriously. Put a little more research into it than you did for the last car you bought.
