Get Your Finances Organized
October 14th, 2009 by JR Griggs
With today’s technology and software I am surprised at how many people I meet who do not use any software to organize their finances. They are still using the old pen and paper system. Or even worse an actual checkbook register. This may be fine for keeping up with your expenses but it can be a pain to track and monitor them.
Keeping Track
It’s not just about knowing what’s in the account. It’s also about knowing how much you are spending on certain things. When you need to see how much you spent on auto repairs, it could take some time to go through all the records. With a good financial program it would do this automatically for you.
I am big on tracking and statistics in just about everything I do. When you use proper tracking with your finances you can create a better budget and monitor how well you are sticking to it. If you can see exactly how much money you spent on dining out last year you can make adjustments and eat in more for savings.
You can also be sure to never miss a bill that is due or to be aware of an automatic payment that might be coming in. If you have a good financial program it will remind you of upcoming bills, it can also automatically enter them for you so you know that money is spent. Many programs will even handle your ebills for you and send them out on the days you schedule.
Get Organized
The more organized you are the more money you can save. You can avoid overspending. Avoid being too careless with your money. Avoid late fees by missing due dates. Avoid overdraft fees from not remembering auto withdrawals.
There are a few good programs out there. I have been using Microsoft Money for quite some time. But with the recent announcement that they are not making the program anymore I am looking at some other options.
Quicken is a program I used to use and may go back to. They even have a free online version now online.
So do some homework, find one that works best for you and use it.
