Eating Healthy On a Budget

October 8th, 2009 by JR Griggs

eating healthy on a budget As money gets tight today there are some places that benefit. Usually fast food chains. But if you’re loading up on Big Macs it will cost you down the road in medical bills. So you want to stay healthy but when money’s tight the dollar menu looks really good. So what can you do to stay healthy and not go broke?

Look For A Healthier Version

What do I mean by that? Well, take Ramen noodles for instance. This is a great meal if you are on a budget. But each pack is 7g of fat. But did you know for a few more cents per pack you can buy the baked ones? These have less than half the fat and are not much difference in taste. There are many alternatives like this to common foods.

Bring Your Own Bag

Stop hitting the dollar menu for lunch and bring a sandwich. You can make a nice turkey sandwich for about the same cost. You’re also going to save money on gas by not driving to a fast food restaurant. Canned soup can be very inexpensive etc… There are many options to bring your own lunch and keep it healthy.

Stay Away From Packages

Always remember that the more packaging and simplifying that is done for a product you buy makes it cost more. For example a head of lettuce is a lot cheaper than a bag of cut lettuce. Dehydrating your own fruit is cheaper than buying a package of it. Packaged meat is more money than the deli meat. Sure it is more work to peel the lettuce and cut it up for salads and yes it does take a while to dehydrate fruit but if you care about your health and finances than I am sure you can find the motivation.

What are some healthy alternatives that you have found that are inexpensive?
