Can You Talk to Your Kids?

can-you-talk-to-your-kids I saw a TV commercial today that I have seen before but this time it really bugged me. It was one of those “talk to your kids about drugs” commercials. Starts off with this guy listening to a tape of slang terms and him repeating them as if he is learning Spanish or another language. He is also reading what you can visibly see as one of the “dummies” books. Maybe, “How to Talk to Your Kids For Dummies.” Then a narrator is heard saying that parents need to talk to their kids about drugs. I saw this and once again saw that the image portrayed today is, that parents are clueless with their kids and “it’s ok, your normal.”

Societies idea of parenting

This is a sad reality. I am not against the commercial’s message necessarily. You should talk to your kids about drugs. It is the image of the dumb parent who never talks to his kid in the first place that bugs me. The saddest part, is that there are a lot of parents out there just like this. Parents are growing farther and farther from their kids and are not active in their lives. It’s like watching strangers living together.

Society tells us this is how family works. We see it in the TV shows and movies today. Of course the government isn’t helping much. On one hand they tell you that you are responsible for your children and on the other, they say you have no right to know if your daughter gets an abortion. It’s a double team effort to undermine parents.

The solution

Here is your solution, ignore society and ignore what the government tries to tell you about your role as a parent. In my family we follow Biblical principles for parenting and marriage. That is no doubt the best way to lead a family. The secular view of the family is so confusing these days, it leaves parents unsure of what their role really is. This among other issues creates a bunch of strangers living in a house and calling it family.

Your communication with your kids should be a daily event. You should be the first person they go to with a problem. Eat at the table with them. Tuck them in at night and read them a story, pray with them, sing with them. When you decided to have kids, you took on the responsibility to be the biggest influence, in the direction of a  human being’s life. It is your job to raise them into adults. Your actions today, determine who they will be tomorrow.

If you are that parent in the commercial, talk to your kids as soon as possible. Statistics say your kid may be doing drugs just because of where you are as a parent. After that work on permanently changing your relationship with them.

If you are not that person but feel like you will be when your kids are older, make a change now. You take the responsibility of investing in their lives. Society tells you that you are incapable of talking to your kids, keep in mind there is a whole other agenda it is teaching them.
